Can I sell my house to the council?

If the property market hasn’t yielded results in selling a property turning to the council as a prospective buyer can seem like a possible option. After all, they need to be able to provide houses for people so they will need to have adequate numbers of homes available. We often get asked the question by customers, do councils buy houses and is it possible to sell your property to the council?  The answer is always, it depends.

In theory, yes councils do buy houses. Whether or not your local council is actively buying properties will depend on a number of factors. If they already have a surplus of houses then they may not be actively looking for property, and even if they don’t have enough houses they may not have the budget available to invest. Even though there is an overall housing crisis within the UK, council budgets have been cut across the board so they will be very careful with their spending. Any property purchases they make will be subjected to public scrutiny so they won’t be paying over the odds for anything.

There will be more demand on particular councils to accommodate people quickly so it just depends where your property is located and what price you are willing to accept for it. Particular parts of your city or town will prove more desirable and cost effective for your local council.

To find out for sure you will need to get in touch with your local council and see if they are currently looking to buy houses in your area. If your local authority is looking to buy property it’s unlikely that they will be looking for large properties with lots of bedrooms.  If your council is buying private houses it is more likely to be looking for properties with one to three bedrooms in less affluent areas.

Some key facts:

– Do councils buy private houses? In some cases, yes.

– Councils do buy houses, but each particular one will have different needs and budgets.

– In 2026, many councils are in debt and struggling to provide key services.

– If your council is buying houses you should still collect different house offers before agreeing to a sale.

Can I sell my house to a housing association?

If your council is not currently in the market it can also be worth enquiring with your local housing association. There are significantly more housing associations than councils in the UK so there may be more opportunities to sell your house to them. Housing associations exist to provide affordable housing for people in need, including those on low incomes, vulnerable individuals, and families who cannot access suitable homes through the private market. If your property is in an area with a shortfall in affordable housing they may consider buying your property.

They will be looking to purchase property during certain times so a quick sale may be possible with them. However, they are also run as not for profit organisations so they will be constrained by spending budgets and may not be able to buy your house at an acceptable price. Pros and cons of selling your house to the council

The downside to any private sale that you enter into will be the final agreed selling price. If you’ve tried to sell your property on the open market and found no suitable offers then any offers that result from a private sale are going to be lower than you’ve been offered previously.
Arranging a sale with a council may not prove to be the quickest as they will have a lot of paperwork and hoops to jump through on their end. You’ll be able to get an estimate of how long an agreed sale would take to go through. Depending on how long it is you may be better off going back to the open market.

The pros to selling your house to the council are mainly that you have another option for who will buy your property. If your local council is currently looking to buy properties in your area it could prove advantageous to you in that you’ll have another offer to consider.

Can you still buy a property from the council in Scotland?

The right to buy scheme was introduced by the UK government back in May 1979. While it still exists in England it has been abolished in Scotland and Wales.  You can no longer buy your council house in Scotland.

Collect different offers before selling a house to the council

If you are looking into selling your house to the council it can’t hurt to get a few different buying offers. It is worth checking out whether or not your local council or housing associations are buying at the moment. If they are then find out how much they will pay for your property.

Armed with as many offers as possible you may be able to find one that you’ll be willing to accept for a quick sale. If you don’t end up selling your house to the council then we can also provide you with a free no obligation property valuation as well as an offer to buy your property.
